"...It almost always starts with a nice long walk in the woods or a good hike."

Meet jewelry artist Marissa Perkins from Upstate, New York. She has been creating jewelry for three years now and her creations can be seen on Instagram @creativeroots_studio 💚

During the pandemic, Marissa, just like many others, lost her job. Before, she was creating jewelry as a hobby, but ultimately decided to make jewelry to support herself and her family. Not knowing if it would work out at that time because so many families could barely afford the necessities, let alone jewelry, she took a chance and never looked back.

When she was getting started, Marissa recalled people being so supportive and she has great friends and family supporting her. Her first design was a tiny compass. She said that not only does she love hiking, but it represented finding her way on a new career path and developing her style. She shared that up until now, it's still a best seller. 💚

Marissa's first piece of jewelry was sold at a little shop. She said, "I remember picking up the check and thinking I had hit the lottery and feeling very motivated."

Her brand name, Creative Roots Studio, is quite special. Marissa explained that the meaning of the name comes from growing up along a river in the country where she found inspiration early on (her roots) and from there, trying all kinds of creative mediums until she found metalsmithing. Moreover, she also paints, do photography, and pottery. ✨

THE DESIGN PROCESS

"Sometimes I sketch out a design and sometimes I just wing it," Marissa said. Adding that it almost always starts with a nice long walk in the woods or a good hike. 🥰

Asked to describe her own style, she said, "My jewelry is for women who climb mountains and move mountains. Earthy, rustic, inspiring."

JEWELRY DESIGN TIPS, TRICKS, AND HANDY TECHNIQUES

What's one design tip you one to share with your fellow artists?

"Practice another art form. I can't tell you how often sketching or photographing nature helps inspire my jewelry designs. I think it adds to the originality of your work too."

One piece of technical advice on creating.

"I'm not one to give technical advice, because I'm still learning everyday. My motto is, if at first you don't succeed, Google it."

Any words of encouragement or tips to those who are starting out in the world of jewelry-making?

"Don't make anything you wouldn't wear yourself and be authentic."

Lastly, here is Marissa's message to the universe 💚✨
