Moose Spotlight: A Silversmith’s Path In Creating Limitless Opportunities
This Homewood, Alabama-based jewelry artist, Laurey Glenn, also known as @azureskyshop on Instagram, has been making jewelry for a total of eight years to this date.
Laurey started jewelry-making as she loved making things with her own hands. She shared she has always been drawn to the intricate Native American seed bead details on their clothing. Once she got her first bead loom in high school and made her first piece, she was hooked!
To her, the most challenging part of the process of creating your own jewelry is knowing what she would like to do and either not having the tools she needs or the skills to do it. She shared that it is a constant learning process. In Alabama, Laurey said that there are not a lot of learning resources for silversmithing so she has made numerous trips back to Oklahoma for classes.
Truly, if there’s a will there’s a way to find what you’re looking for!
As a jewelry artist, Laurey has a personal goal she wants to do. She shared with us that she made a wide band Number 8 turquoise ring for her husband, which she is pretty proud of and absolutely love. She had wanted to make a wide band ring for so long but just wasn't sure how to go about it. She’s still figuring out the best process for it, but she told us how proud of it she is of that piece.
Nature inspires Laurey’s work with all its amazing colors and textures. Her bench is in her garage and she sits there and looks out of the trees and clouds while she is working. She adds that she feels like nature keeps her jewelry more organic and not so sterile and perfect.
“Turquoise is so diverse in all of its many types,” Laurey said when we asked her why she works with them. She said she may never know all the different mines and types with the different types it has. Blue is her favorite color so she declares how naturally drawn she is to turquoise, saying she also loves how it combines with other stones and colors.

“My best tip is to keep going. If you get stuck or frustrated, take a break, but then come back and figure out a way through,” Laurey emphasized this helpful tip that will stand true for every artist in the world. She continued that there is no one right way to do anything. If you feel like you need to learn more, she told us that there are always online classes to look up, new tools to check out, and whatever one needs to do to be able to achieve what they want. Lastly, she wants to communicate with her fellow creators to never give up!

What do you like about working with Turquoise Moose?
"Turquoise Moose stones are so unique. I follow a lot of stone cutters and sellers and you can't find many other people selling the types of turquoise they do. They are also easy to get in touch with and ask questions and are very supportive of the community."
