Meet the creative behind the Instagram account @jodigmetaldesigns, Jodi Galperin!

THE JOURNEY TO CREATING JEWELRY

Jodi has always been interested in creating art and had a particular interest in jewelry, especially wanting to create her own designs. She shared that she used to do a lot of beading and and other work with wire and base metals. For her, that was not very fulfilling as she wanted to take it a step further; however, for years the thought of using a torch intimidated her, that is, until she hit the age of 50.

"My experience starting out was great," Jodi said. They have a local art center that offers a variety of metals classes. Four years later, she's still taking classes and learning more and more each semester. Her biggest nemesis used to be creating bezels! She told us that she fried one after the other, but she was persistent and it finally clicked.

ARTIST’S DESIGN STYLE

"I felt a deep sense of satisfaction working on a ceramic cabochon where I also made the chain," Jodi recalled when we asked her if she remembers her first AHA moment. She added that the whole design worked so well and she could not be happier with the result!

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Jodi usually gets inspired by cabochons or thinking about different ways to incorporating of sterling silver wire into her designs. "I do not make sketches, rather, it’s all in my head," she said. Sometimes, she needs to work out the details on paper, but most of the time she just thinks it through and get to work.

When we asked her to describe her design style, she said it's rustic and organic.

JEWELRY DESIGN TIPS, TRICKS, AND HANDY TECHNIQUES

What's one design tip you one to share with your fellow artists?

"The sky is the limit with your designs!!! If something doesn’t work out, you can always use the scrap silver for casting. There is no waste, it’s all a learning process. Keep moving forward trying new processes and techniques."

Any words of encouragement or tips to those who are starting out in the world of jewelry-making?

"Dive in and take a class, it will be the best thing you can do for yourself."
