Discover the Interesting History of Gorgeous Bisbee Turquoise

Bisbee Turquoise Is an Excellent Addition to Any Jewelry Store or Gemstone Collection.

Explore High-Quality Arizona Turquoise

Bisbee turquoise has a fascinating history that stems back over a hundred years. The Bisbee Mine got founded in the mid-1970s. The mine is located outside of Bisbee, Arizona.

When the mine was first opened, miners didn't look for gemstones like turquoise. Any gemstone materials got thrown away by the mining companies. Minors got prohibited from taking gemstones from the property due to liability reasons.

While it was being mined, the Bisbee mined produced the following:

  • 8,000,000,000 pounds of copper
  • 3,000,000 ounces of gold
  • 77,000,000 ounces of silver
  • Billions of pounds of zinc and lead

The mine also produced other minerals, like azurite and malachite. The mine got closed in 1975.

The Debut of Bisbee Turquoise

A large deposit of turquoise got discovered in the late 1950s in the Lavender Pit region of the mine. Most of the turquoise got hauled off to an area where waste got dumped.

Miners recognized how beautiful and precious Bisbee turquoise was. Even though they were prohibited from taking the stone, some would sneak small amounts out in their lunch boxes. Soon after that, Bisbee turquoise made its way into circulation and the Southwestern jewelry industry.

Bisbee turquoise quickly became the finest turquoise available by the early 1960s. Small amounts were allowed to get removed from the Lavender Pit and sold to jewelers.

The Allure of Striking Bisbee Turquoise

There are only small amounts of Bisbee turquoise available today, making it a rare gemstone. Its exceptional beauty makes it even more sought after by jewelry creators and gemstone collectors. When you purchase Bisbee turquoise, you know you'll receive a hard-to-find historical artifact.

The color of Bisbee turquoise ranges from dark to medium blue. The turquoise is accented by a brown, block, or red matrix. This is often called "smoky Bisbee." Green shades of this stone have been found.
