Meet jewelry artist Amalia Hubbert. She has been been learning to work with metal since 2019. She got serious about a year ago and started selling pieces under her business name, Mooncoin Studio. Her creations can be seen on Instagram @mooncoinstudio. ✨
THE JOURNEY TO CREATING JEWELRY
Amalia's inspiration comes from a deep seated appreciation for traditional crafts, as well as the simple elegance of a well-made thing - that's why she got inspired to start creating her own!
"I feel like every thing that I make teaches me a better way to make that thing in the future!" In the beginning, Amalia found herself overstretching as she plotted out complicated designs, but her work really progressed when she focused on her technique. She added, "I am always learning, but to me, the loveliest piece is the one most well-made."
Recalling the very first piece she sold, Amalia told us it was a custom ring commissioned by a friend of hers. "It was set with a Turquoise Moose cab, and she wears it every day! I barely charged her for materials, but she was so excited to support my work, and it makes me happy whenever I see it on her finger!" Love for supportive friends! 💚
Curious whether or not there's a special meaning behind Amalia's brand name, she shared, "My business name is an homage to my father—an incredible musician/bagpipe maker/craftsman, and my first port of call when I run into a problem at my bench. “Mooncoin” was the name of his Irish band in the 80s, but it also reminds me of the final line from one of my favorite poems, “the silver apples of the moon, the golden apples of the sun.”"

JEWELRY DESIGN TIPS, TRICKS, AND HANDY TECHNIQUES
What's one design tip you one to share with your fellow artists?
"I'm no master, but the rule I try to follow more than any other is to never get lazy. The more I focus on doing every step right, the easier the process becomes. A design is only as good as the work behind it."
One piece of technical advice on creating.
"Don’t be afraid to start over! I try to conserve as much material as I can, but I have torn pieces apart and remade them just for peace of mind."
Any words of encouragement or tips to those who are starting out in the world of jewelry-making?
"The best way is the way that works for you! There is so much advice out there, which can be really helpful, but don’t be intimidated by other techniques! As long as you end up with the result you want, you’re doing it right."
