Eden is a jewelry artist based in Portland, Oregon. She started metalsmithing in fall of 2021, and has been posting her creations on Instagram @silversistersjewelry.

THE JOURNEY TO CREATING JEWELRY

Eden shared that she loves wearing jewelry and was picky about her style. She added, "Making jewelry is a creative outlet for me that allows me to have freedom in what I make for myself while also sharing what I make with others."

She said that she's still experiencing learning curves almost every week. "I am fairly new to the craft but I am loving the journey." Eden is still finding her favorite styles and techniques in making her work, and love being challenged by other people to go further than she did yesterday in her creativity.

Recalling her very first piece sold, Eden said that it was after she posted a photo of stones she had available. Her friend from college reached out to ask for a custom piece. How amazing!

Behind Eden's brand name is a really sweet and thoughtful story! "I grew up on a farm with a view of the Three Sisters mountain range in my back yard. I also love and adore my twin sister, and it felt fitting that I would encompass my favorite person as well as a favorite childhood memory in my brand name."

ARTIST'S DESIGN STYLE

Eden's very first AHA moment when she started creating involves turquoise! She shared, "I have been trying to dive more into the world of turquoise (whereas initially it was hard to stray from jasper of any kind!). Making pieces with turquoise has been really eye-opening for me in terms of others’ preferences as well as new design ideas that fit with each unique cabochon. I am very pleased with my initial pieces that include turquoise and can’t wait to make more!"

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Eden walked us through her design process. She shared, "I start with the shape and size of the cabochon and determine what kind of design would complement it and the person wearing it. Sometimes it takes foreverrr to decide on a design and execute the plan! As I continue to learn new techniques, my designs evolve as well, so it pushes me to keep learning. I want to do right by the beautiful cabs I purchase and their makers as well, and tend to be inspired by nature and things that bring me joy (like plants, animals and landscapes)."

When asked to describe her design style, she explained that she hasn’t settled on a particular style, simply because she doesn’t want to put up walls for what she feels comfortable creating! She hopes to always have a variety so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

JEWELRY DESIGN TIPS, TRICKS, AND HANDY TECHNIQUES

What's one design tip you one to share with your fellow artists?

"I would recommend not rushing anything; great pieces can take time to design and you shouldn’t pressure yourself! Also, be authentic and don’t feel like you need to fit in a box or appeal to one particular style - tastes are diverse and your art should be able to be diverse, too!"

One piece of technical advice on creating.

"My technical advice on creating is to not rush a design or idea; it’s fine to ponder for a long time to make a piece you had envisioned. There is no rush to creativity! And oftentimes, rushing a piece will lead to more mistakes and sometimes it’s better to take your time or do more research on a skill before continuing and feeling more frustration 😊"

Any words of encouragement or tips to those who are starting out in the world of jewelry-making?

"Be open to learning and be able to forgive yourself for your mistakes!"
